Centronics Printer Server - Edimax PS-1203M

Post by admin »

We try a very old Edimax Printer-server:

To be able to use my (good) old Canon LBP-660 laser printer:

http://www.certech.com.au/productimages ... sxx03x.pdf

Bad luck, it looks working correctly according LED status (see next link).
Only it does not accept my openWrt DHCP server? it has a physical link, but no ip ...
(Did i ever setup a static ip-address? I don't know anymore, and there's no reset button on this device.)

Some found sites have links in them to download software, but pitty anough too old and not functioning anymore.

Board based on:
- RDC R1610
http://www.nordfield.com/downloads/data ... /R1610.pdf

- AT7601f Printer Port Controller:
http://www.digchip.com/datasheets/parts ... T7601F.php

- AM29LV040B, 4Mbit (512k x 8bit):
http://www.chipfind.ru/datasheet/pdf/amd/am29lv040b.pdf

- 512K x 16 Bits x 2 Banks (16-MBIT) SYNCHRONOUS DYNAMIC RAM:

- ATMEL 302 93C86 SI27:

And, YES, we have it working again! Had indeed a static ip, now it DHCP (no DHCP server).

But now see if it will work with my Canon printer, as the status on the server is always: paper out ...

We go on testing :)

Since we have access to the web-interface of the PS-1203M we also need more info aboutthe LBP-660 and its drivers ...
Difficult, as this printer did cam with driver software 4 Win98, maybe WinXP, but i found also:
driver 4 linux:
http://www.boichat.ch/nicolas/lbp660/

As we still have zero (0) output seen on the printer itself, we have to try the linux driver, i guess...
We have a WinXP machine which can 'see' the PS-1203M:

But the status there:

is most often different from the status seen in the web-interface:
Image

Web-interface also looks kinda 1998 ... only 1 page.

Printing a test-page from the PS-1203M web-interface or from driver Properties settings, both don't print anything.
Changing the driver settings result in spooling 'hanging', or just spools and looses the print-job, without printing anything.
It stays a bit weird.

And actually looking such far into this, because i needed 1 printout, LOL
Maybe i could better look 4 a USB to Centronics port, like:

Which are sold on eBay below $2 ...

Okay, we leave this thread as is ...
As also the HDD in my old Windows XP machine broke down during its last backup, of course.
Wanted this machine as VM in my ESXi5.5 environment, but now i even better go back to the backup of my (older) laptop, which was thé printerserver for about 10 years ago :)

We also bought the $2 USB to Centronics port, which we can use when it arrives.
Printing from windows 8 or higher is not be possible, there's no driver available for these OS's, but another driver could be used when printing over a network (i red somewhere). Otherwise we have to make a new Linux machine with the LBP-660 linux driver and see how that works out.

Awaiting 4 the USB to Centronics port, we leave this thread as is (and we did already printed the 1 file we needed).

Even tried connecting the LBP-660 to my first wlan-router, a ASUS WL-500g with parallel port.

Although it does 'see' the printer, printing seems impossible, as seen earlier. Saw a writing of myself from 2006/2007? But that was on the broken HDD. Maybe i'll try getting those old messages back (there is also another older backup ...)

What we do have, some logging from http:// [--IP of DEV--] /Main_AdmStatus_Content.asp

So an option to build openWrt (2.6 kernel) with the mentioned Linux driver for the LBP-660 could be a nice sollution, but a lot of testing etc.
When the USB to Centronics arrives, we have 2 options:
  • building Printserver on ASUS WL-500g
  • building Printserver on Virtual XP or Linux machine.
