All 64bits ! ESXi5.5 on an i7-2600 machine with 32 GB DDR3

Post by admin »

As of november 2015 we only do 64bits linux machines now.

ESXi5.5 running on a Lenovo m91p:

With full 32GB DDR3 memory : http://poweredbymushkin.com/catalog/ite ... 92-994069s

Booting from SanDisk 4GB USB stick ESXi5.5 as main Virtual Server.

Another (same machine) with 8GB DDR3 as new home PC.
The i7 processor does support AMT to also be able to remotely 'take over' console over the same ethernet cable.

Within the Virtual environment the installation of Linux Jessie 8.2 goes great: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=57

System 'hangs' ...

This morning my website was not available, after checking ESX, it was all unreachable by vSphere Client.
I also tried AMT-remote but only saw latest 'normal' screen, but could not login or (ALT-F12) see loggings of ESX machine.
A reboot from AMT website restarted the ESX machine within 10 minutes, all VM's running again.

Loggings from my OpenWrt-router showed downtime between 02:20u & 10:00u today.

Further investigating after reboot finished, i could see some loggings on ESX:

Reboot starts & 'Section for VMware ESX':

Fatal error @ 2016-04-25T00:21:40.011Z :

With no logging the reboot after 2016-04-25T00:20:50Z :

64bits - ESXi5.5 Configuration Issues

Post by admin »

And, of course, when i want to change ESXi VM network environment, i see the following 'Configuration Issues' message on main ESXi vSphere Client:

Image

And a lot of 'bootbank' messages in the ESXi eventlog:

Image

Investigating, this most probably is a faulty USB boot device ...
I need to find the place where i added the on-board ethernet adapter of my machine to the ESXi-installer .iso file.
Must be here somewhere ;) Found it! /DGWP01/?page_id=1310

And that after 73 days of running:

Image

It's also time to update the ESXi to higher build level (or try ESXi 6.0 ?)

New ESXi6.0 on an i7-2600 machine with 32 GB DDR3

Post by admin »

Just several hours (sleep) after updating ESXi 5.5 to 6.0, and started the main webserver, my PC does not have any connection anymore to the internet?
Even my first OpenWrt-LEDE router won't connect to the original ZyXEL, which did work 4 the last 76 days?

Image

Systemlog of 1st OpenWrt-LEDE box (wlan-repeater):

Code: Select all

Checking further, i cant get to ZyXEL original box, can't get to my ISP router.
Connect the wlan-repeater direct to ISP router, still no success.
Rebooted the ZyXEL original box, re-established wlan-repeater to it, and we have a new connection.

And all works? Oh wait, only my own (noip.me) website does not work????
Wtf? On direct ip it does work, what's going on?
Checking the noip.me servers on: http://www.isitdownrightnow.com/noip.com.html
It all should work, but still on my own CMD line, 'Ping request could not find host dgcomsys.noip.me.':

Image

How do you explain this??
It's rather annoying, but anyway it's 'kinda' working again ... after 2 hours of checking and setting.

[UPDATE] This was most probably due to ddos attack: https://tweakers.net/nieuws/117223/dyn- ... raten.html (and on old name :) )

Now further with the restore of all my VM's, or try to make copy of the config of the old USB stick, which seems te work normally.
No idea why ESXi 5.5 metioned that it had lost it.

But as i yesterday made some changes to networking etc already in the new environment we just grab the needed VM's and re-inventory them.

Network on ESXi5.5:

Network on ESXi6.0

Anyway, we're now running ESXi6.0.0, latest updates (build 4510822):

Image

Only have to upgrade the VMFS datastorages. And we wait 4 that until all is working fine on 6.0
And with remark that the missing network adapter in ESXi5.5 iso, Intel Corporation 82579LM Gigabit Network connection driver, is available on the regular ESXi6.0 u2 iso file.
There is no need to make a new iso file with a ESXi-Customizer for my machine!

[UPDATE] Read further ... HERE :)
