TorRouter v23.05.x, WiP

Post by admin »

As of august 2023, building v23.05.0(-rcX), the additional changes for network DSA are having some issues, it seems.
https://github.com/openwrt/openwrt/pull/13200

No build for P2812-F1, v23.05.0 is possible or downloadable, it returns errors during make defconfig.

I will try running latest snapshot (r24137) and see if all patches are well done.
This build did run with no errors at all.

First we disable the Wifi by remark out the pci-scan and wifii off/on in rc.local
We can do that on CLI after 1st boot.
Be aware:
Make sure the device has enough free memory before updating!!
Stop Tor if needed before start updating!

I was a little late with connecting TTL serial, but have the first boot after sysupgrade successful.

I do need a new snapshot-build which uses less memory.
Better, I try the downloadable (https://firmware-selector.openwrt.org/) version first.
For now I just stopped Tor, found out that lan3 and lan4 are NOT working.

To do:
- Check if DSA networking is working properly.
- OpenVPN fully removed (for P2812-F1 due to lack of memory).

New build must/should have:
- Tor at least version 0.4.8.7, starting @point 98 instead of 50.
- OpenVPN fully removed (for P2812-F1 due to lack of memory).

Re: TorRouter v23.05.0, WiP

Post by admin »

If encountering errors during the ./scripts/feeds install -a build command:

Code: Select all

$ ./scripts/feeds install -a
Installing all packages from feed packages.
WARNING: Not overriding core package 'dante'; use -f to force
WARNING: Not overriding core package 'igmpproxy'; use -f to force
WARNING: Not overriding core package 'pcre'; use -f to force
Installing all packages from feed luci.
Installing all packages from feed routing.
Installing all packages from feed telephony.
First try a second run of the same command ;)
If you keep the same messages (warnings) you could clear old info on packages:

Code: Select all

rm tmp/.*
rm tmp/info/.*
This will clear old info on packages.

Next we face error on make defconfig:

Code: Select all

$ make defconfig
tmp/.config-package.in:33662:error: recursive dependency detected!
tmp/.config-package.in:33662:	symbol PACKAGE_python3-pymysql depends on PYTHON3_PYMYSQL_SHA_PASSWORD_SUPPORT
feeds/packages/lang/python/pymysql/Config.in:4:	symbol PYTHON3_PYMYSQL_SHA_PASSWORD_SUPPORT depends on PACKAGE_python3-pymysql
For a resolution refer to Documentation/kbuild/kconfig-language.rst
subsection "Kconfig recursive dependency limitations"
(I tried) To solve this, 1st do git branch master and build 1 version (snapshot, this works!).
Then git checkout v23.05.0 and build again.
This is kinda weird, the error returned when running make defconfig ??
Mentioned python3-pymysql is not even activated within .config.

Code: Select all

# CONFIG_PACKAGE_python3-pymysql is not set
Full log:

Code: Select all

$ git checkout v23.05.0
Note: switching to 'v23.05.0'.

You are in 'detached HEAD' state. You can look around, make experimental
changes and commit them, and you can discard any commits you make in this
state without impacting any branches by switching back to a branch.

If you want to create a new branch to retain commits you create, you may
do so (now or later) by using -c with the switch command. Example:

  git switch -c <new-branch-name>

Or undo this operation with:

  git switch -

Turn off this advice by setting config variable advice.detachedHead to false

HEAD is now at bd4f415efa OpenWrt v23.05.0: adjust config defaults

First we tried git clean -dfx, but we see some warnings during 1st ./scripts/feeds install -a

A second run of ./scripts/feeds install -a did the trick (for now).

Code: Select all

$ ./scripts/feeds install -a

Installing all packages from feed routing.

And again we have the same error regarding pymysql, pitty, as snapshot build does work!

Most probably this is due to lantiq/xRX200 and DSA conversion?
See also: https://forum.openwrt.org/t/lantiq-targ ... -15/159301
And: https://github.com/openwrt/openwrt/pull/13200
Thought it was already working on OpenWrt v22.03.5.
Although it needed some workarounds.

As we wanna build TorRouter v23.05.2, which has the P2812 now in their Download-Selector.
We face an old error (again) after 1st make menuconfig command.

Found 1 solution:
https://github.com/openwrt/packages/issues/22664

Trying now on vmware version.

We lost all own made changed within P2812/TorRouter/files/ folder (disapeared after git clean command!!!)
Also RT3062.eeprom, although I have enough copies, but still weird that git can clear local folders?~)

Re: TorRouter v23.05.2, WiP

Most building issues are gone, were due to upgrading the main OS to Debian 12.
OpenWrt's building packages needed also to be re-installed afterwards!

For the ZyXEL P2812-HNU(L)-F1 device the Tor-full package is getting too much.
Due to memory limits for this device, future TorRouter versions will have Tor-basic and tor-geoip package installed.
(Although on the background it is Tor that is installed.)
We leave away tor-gencert, tor-resolve, tor-hs and torsocks in the P-2812-HNU-F1 releases.

Re: TorRouter v23.05.2, WiP

Post by admin »

Using OpenWrt Firmware-Selector selected P2812-F1 and added Tor only.
When restarting a F1 with Tor active, it will crash, there is not enough memory available.
Total usage of Tor is over 40MB, also due to tor-geoip, which gets bigger along time.
When restarting a F1 without Tor active it consumes 64MB, together with kernel, 20MB minimum free memory for luci-web etc.
We run over 128MB memory.
This means that this version will not be able to run TorRouter firmware?

TorRouter v22.03.5 r20134-5f15225c1e already had only 3MB free after reboot, although that version also has openVPN, Printer support, usb and collectd / statistics active.

Code: Select all

root@TorRouter:/# free
total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 121068 64036 22940 24332 34092 3680
Swap: 0 0 0
Weird is that after about 30 minutes the free view is changed:

Code: Select all

root@TorRouter:/# free
total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 121068 43108 44184 24340 33776 24356
Swap: 0 0 0
Could this be due to zip-packaging the tor-geoip ? Idk.

TorRouter v23.05.2 in failsafe mode:

Code: Select all

root@(none):/# free
total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 120156 13512 97868 28 8776 102572
Swap: 0 0 0

Re: TorRouter v23.05.2, WiP

Post by admin »

We do run some more tests with v23.05.2
As we discovered strange things during build, which may related to branch changes, as I also read on the wiki:
https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-develope ... uildsystem
:!: When changing branches, it is recommended to perform a thorough scrub of your source tree by using the make distclean command. This ensures that your source tree does not contain any build artifacts or configuration files from previous build runs.

We have now folder TEST_OpenWrt for v23.05.x and P2812 has v22.03.6.

Removed:
  • VPN - No used and takes too much memory.
  • Luci-app-opkg - To install additional packages, but that it now only possible from CLI.
Also due to the fact that within own builds the kernel-hash is (mostly) always different, compared to OpenWrt stable releases.

Re: TorRouter v23.05.2, WiP

Post by admin »

Clean TorRouter v23.05.2 can not run tor-geoip anymore on the P2812-F1.
The router will crash due to low on memory.

We make a final TorRouter v23.05.2 (or v23.05.3) release available, without tor-geoip for the P2812-F1, after testing.
Also a TorRouter v22.03.6 version will be available with latest tor and hopefully tor-geoip.

TorRouter main will become available on new hardware: an AVM Fritz!box 4040 with further future releases.
